19th July 12-Bungle Bungles (Purnunulu national Park

Purnunulu National Park  otherwise known as The Bungle Bungles is on the Great northern Highway between Kununurra and Fitzroy Crossing.  You can stay at Turkey Creek about 50km further down the highway or at the camp ground power/unpowered at The Bungle Bungles Camp Ground  1km of dirt road heading into the national park.  We stayed here.  It’s only been going since about 2002 so they are still establishing trees and grass etc but it was nice enough.  We didn’t drink the water here but you did have a hose at each site even on unpowered so I think it was drinkable as a creek nearby.  It cost us $35.00 for family of 4 for the night.  The other option is to have a serious offroad caravan or camper trailer or tent and you can stay in the actual national park which saves the 1 ¾ hour drive to get in there.

You can see everything that you really need to in 1 day if you leave at daylight which in WA is like 6am easily then back by 5.30pm before its dark.  Cathedral gorge is a huge amphitheatre fromed by sandstone cliffs.  The Aoustics are amazing here then was along the dry bed of Piccaninny creek where you can see the Domes up close.  There are walks under 4km round this area and easy going.

In the Cathedral.  All white sand and a small pool of water that you wouldn't go in, stagnant looking.
Today we went to the Bungle Bungles.  we saw Echidna Chasm, the Bee hive Domes and Cathedral Gorge. When we got back I had a shower

Echidna chasm on the northern side of the range is a cleft in the rock massif and is thought to be one of Australia’s best walking destinations and we definitely agree.  It was amazing.  The domes are very fragile, they are thought to have formed 350-375 million years ago.

Echidna Chasm.  Scary, looks like the rock will drop on me
